Artist Statement

This piece strives to be a visual representation of pain; of the anguish, both of physical and emotional, that pain causes to the individual experiencing it. The piece has a positive message in that while pain can weaken and damage; the individual can still remain strong as a whole, despite the pain's attack from within. The blue structure represents the individual and the red spikes symbolize the pain. Also, the piece expresses the idea that, although the pain begins from an inner, hidden place, wholly contained within the person experiencing it, many of the pain's effects such as depression, disability and dysfunction extend outside of the individual.
